cash for clunkers

You've, no doubt, heard of the Cash for Clunkers program that was to encourage the economy by enticing consumers to trade in their gas-guzzlers for a new fuel-efficient vehicle. You may have even heard about trading in your old refrigerator. But there is a new twist on this concept that you've probably not heard of and probably would never even think about.

Last week on a local radio program there was a commercial for a new "Cash for Clunkers" program. It, surprisingly enough, was a commercial for the convenience store. That's right. They are offering a 25% discount on a new . . . um . . . appliance when you bring in your "old worn out one." Can I just say that is gross!!

First, why would anyone bring in their old . . . appliance?? Second, and more importantly, what in the world would the store do with them? Again, that's just gross!!

Would it be too much of a stretch to imagine them recycling the raw materials?

I suppose that the metals from the motors might have a non-zero salvage value.

Yeah, there's a business for recycling them state-side as well.

ugh. Sorry, some things should not be recycled, no matter how environmentally concerned.

"Spices", are one of those things.

Recycling?

It seems to be a pretty good gimmick to folks in. Kind of like the federal government's program. Since those stores probably have a 300% mark-up, I doubt shaving off 25% hurts them. Hopefully, these "appliances" are disposed of in the proper fashion.

Oh, you know, wash 'em real good with bleach. . . ;)

But yeah, even not being a girl, the idea of used, um, 'appliances' does sorta give me the willies. . .
